Werkin' It with Angel Haze
There are very few times that I exclaim, “Holy Shit!” when listening to a new artist. Don’t get me wrong, I am impressed by many new artists I hear because to stand out, even in the slightest of bits, in this savagely overpopulated musical ocean we have nowadays is a feat upon itself. Still, it takes a truly special, insanely and naturally talented young artist to pull the shocking out-loud exclamations from of me. And thus I have only two words: Angel Haze.
Here are her statistics: 21-year-old female rapper, living in New York (transplant from Michigan), just signed to Universal and released her newest mixtape a few days ago. Angel Haze is the kind of musical force and youthful spirit that the music industry, especially the rap game, has needed for a while. Her flow is complicated, heavy with emotion, quick with staccato and each lyric is cleverly devised to pack the most storyline. With her mixtape now out in the world, Haze manages to revision some very notable songs in a stronger light than the original artist. Since when does a young artist rap better over the original beat? Now that’s a true testament of greatness in the making.
